GRAPHES DE TERRAIN
Coordinateur
Matthieu Latapy
APPEL A SOUMISSIONS
Date limite : 30 octobre 2008
Thematique.

Laurent Viennot, INRIA Rocquencourt, France
electronique a Matthieu Latapy (Matthieu.Latapy@lip6.fr).

Paris,
Tu sais comment j'écris ton nom ?
P-A-R-I-S.
Hé ! mec !
Mec, comment t'épelles Paris ?
Paris ? P-A-R-I-S.
P-A-R-I-S.
Alors marche, et attends...
Attends...attends....

# Description du stage

CHRONOLOGY: THE PARIS COMMUNE 1848 December 10: Louis Bonaparte elected president of the Second Republic. 1852 December: Empire of Napoleon III (Louis Bonaparte) proclaimed. Dubbed the Second Empire, the First Empire being that of Napoleon Bonaparte. 1870 January 10: About 100,000 people demonstrate against Empire on the occassion of the funeral of Victor Noir, a republican journalist killed by the Emperor's cousin, Pierre Bonaparte. May 8: A national plebiscite votes confidence in the Empire [about 84% for]. July 19: After a diplomatic struggle over the Hohenzollern (Prussian) candidacy to the Spanish throne, France declares war on Prussia. August 4-6: Crown Prince Frederick, commanding one of three German armies invading France, defeats French Marshal MacMahon at Worth and Weissenburg, pushes him out of Alsace, surrounds Strasbourg, and drives on Nancy. The other two German armies surround Marshal Bazaine's forces in Metz. August 16-18: Bazaine's efforts to break through the German lines are bloodily defeated at Mars-la-Tour and Gravelotte. The Germans advance on Chalons. September 1: Battle of Sedan. MacMahon, attempting to relieve Bazaine at Metz and finding the road closed, fights and is defeated at Sedan. September 2: The French army, together with Emperor Napoleon III, capitulates at Sedan. September 4: At news of Sedan, a Paris mob invades the Palais Bourbon and forces the Legislative Assembly to proclaim the fall of the Empire. Come evening, the Third Republic is proclaimed (at the Hotel de Ville). The provisional Government of National Defence (GND) is set up: General Louis Jules Trochu (President), Leon Gambetta (Ministry of Interior), Jules Favre (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). September 6: GND issues statement: blames war on Imperial government, it now wants peace, but "not an inch of our soil, not a stone of our fortresses, will we cede." Since Prussia demands Alsace-Lorraine, the war continues. September 19: Two German armies begin long siege of Paris. Bismarck figures the "soft and decadent" French will quickly surrender. The GND sends delegation to Tours, soon to be joined by Gambetta (who escapes from Paris in a balloon), to organize resistance in the provinces. October 27: French surrender (Bazaine with 173,000 men) at Metz. October 30: National Guard defeated at Le Bourget. October 31: Rebels storm GND at town hall. Attempt to set up a Commune in Paris, after the model of 1792. Besieged Paris has only a week's supply of food left. November 1: GND promises elections and amnesty to rebels -- promises it will not deliver upon. 1871 January 28: After four long months, Paris capitulates to Prussians. While all regular troops are disarmed, the National Guard are permitted to keep their arms -- the populous of Paris remains armed. The GND signs 3-week armistice with Bismarck, to negotiate peace. Paris forts turned over to the Germans. Food brought into Paris. Febuary 8: Elections held in France. Febuary 12: New National Assembly opens at Bordeaux; two-thirds of members are conservatives and wish the war to end. February 16: The Assembly elects Adolphe Thiers chief executive. February 26: Peace concluded with Bismarck: Alsace and one-third of Lorraine surrendered (including Metz); France to pay enormous indemnity over three years; German army of ocupation to slowly withdraw as indemnity payments made. March 1-3: After months of struggle and suffering, Parisians react angrily to the entry of German troops in the city. The National Guard organizes a Central Committee, prepares for conflict. March 11: National Assembly adjourns. It will now set up shop at Versailles on March 20. March 18: Thiers wants to disarm Paris. Sends French troops (regular army) to Paris, but, through fraternization with Parisians, they refuse to carry out Thiers' orders. Generals Claude Martin Lecomte and Jacques Leonard Clement Thomas are killed. The bulk of the troops withdraw. Paris is now controlled by radicals. March 26: A municipal council -- the Paris Commune -- is elected. Central Committee of the National Guard relinquishes power. Commune consists of radical and moderate republicans, mainly followers of Proudhon and Blanqui, with some members of Marx's First International. March 30: Commune abolishes conscription and the standing army. April 1: Civil servant salary cap introduced. April 2: Thiers now enters power struggle with Commune. Versailles troops launch campaign against city. CommunLine truncated

The Poor People Of Paris
-instrumental version by Les Baxter was the # 18 song of the 1955-1959 rock era
-his version was # 1 for 6 weeks in 1956
-competing versions charted by Lawrence Welk (#17), Russ Morgan (#19), and
-Chet Atkins (#52)
-English Words by Jack Lawrence and Music by Marguerite Monnot
-written in 1954 as "La Goualante De Pauvre Jean" and introduced by Edith Piaf
Just got back from Paris, France
All they do is sing and dance
All they've got there is romance
What a tragedy
Every boulevard has lovers
Every lover's in a trance
The poor people of Paree
I feel sorry for the French
Every guy has got a wench
Every couple's got a bench
Kissing shamelessly
Night and day they're making music
While they're making love in French
The poor people of Paree
Milk or water from the sink
Make a true Parisian shrink
Wine is all he'll ever drink
And it worries me
For with wine as cheap as water
Oh, it makes one stop and think
The poor people of Paree
Sister met a boy named Pierre
Had the craziest affair
And the day they parted there
He cried bitterly
Pierre was there to bid her farewell
But he brought his new girl, Claire
The poor people of Paree
So don't go to Paris, France
Not unless you like to dance
Not unless you want romance
Like those poor inhabitants of Paree

"Sometimes He Comes in the Clouds" by Steven Curtis Chapman
These are the places I was so sure I'd find Him
I've looked in the pages
And I've looked down on my knees
I've lifted my eyes in expectation
To see the sun still refusing to shine, but...
Sometimes He comes in the clouds
Sometimes His face cannot be found
Sometimes the sky is dark and gray
But some things can only be known
And sometimes our faith can only grow
When we can't see
So, sometimes He comes in the clouds
Sometimes I see me, a sailor out on the ocean
So brave and so sure as long as the skies are clear
But when the clouds start to gather
I watch my faith turn to fear, but...
Sometimes He comes in the clouds
Sometimes His face cannot be found
Sometimes the sky is dark and gray
But some things can only be known
And sometimes our faith can only grow
When we can't see
So, sometimes He comes in the clouds
Sometimes He comes in the rain
And we question the pain
And wonder why God can seem so far away
But time will show us
He was right there with us, and...
"Where He Leads Me" by Twila Paris
There's a great, broad road, through the meadow,
And many travel there,
But I have a gentle Shepherd,
I would follow anywhere,
Up a narrow path, Through the mountains,
To the valley far below,
To be ever in His presence,
Where He leads me I will go.
And there are many wondrous voices,
Day and night they fill the air,
But there is one so small and quiet,
I would know it anywhere,
In the city or in the wilderness,
There's a ringing crystal clear,
And to be ever close beside Him,
When He calls me I will hear.
Where He leads me, I will follow,
When He calls me I will hear.
There is a great, broad road to nowhere,
And so many travel there,
But I have a gentle Shepherd,
I would follow anywhere,
Though the journey take me far away,
From the place I call my home,
To be ever in His presence,
Where He leads me I will go.
"You'll Be There" by Cindy Morgan
You were there when the lightning fell,
Crashing down in the blue night,
You came in like a raging wind all around,
What a sweet light.
And in the darkness You were there,
And in the good times You were there,
So let me say, with a prayer,
Sweetest Savior who cares,
Angels dance in the air,
And tell us You'll be there.
In the days when the dark and haze gather round,
You're the refuge,
You breathe again and the sun shines in through the clouds,
How we need You,
To be near and to be sovereign,
Giving hope to each tomorrow,
So we say with a prayer,
Sweetest Savior who cares,
Angels dance in the air,
And tell us You'll be there.
Shadow the lightening,
When we are frightened,
Heavenly light keep shining on me,
Shining on me,
Everywhere,
Sweetest Savior who cares,
Angels dance in the air,
And tell us You'll be there.

J. Paris Wall was born in St. Helena parish, La., September 19, 1833, the
eldest of the six children born to D. W. and Elizabeth (Huff) Wall, natives
of South Carolina. His father came to Louisiana in 1812, before the battle
of New Orleans. He was a merchant all of his life, and was a very
prominent figure in the political world. He was probate judge of
Livingston parish for a number of years. He was also president of the
State University while it was at Springfield, before it was removed to
Baton Rouge. His business dealings were of the very highest and he was
recognized as one of the leading, honest and upright citizens of his
parish. He died in 1860, at Osyka, Miss. The paternal grandparents of our
subject were D. W. and Amanda (Wickliff) Wall, natives of South Carolina.
D. W. Wall was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church. The maternal
grand-parents of J. Paris Wall were William and Elizabeth (Breed) Huff,
Mrs. Huff being a cousin of the celebrated Gen. Robert E. Lee. Our subject
was reared and educated in Louisiana, and he attended Centenary college at
Jackson, La., where he graduated in 1853, in the mercantile course. He is
a lawyer and has figured very prominently in the politics of both parish
and state. He was elected state senator for the Florida parishes in 1860
and served for four years, being then only twenty-eight years of age at the
time of his election, and was the youngest member of the senate. He has
been mayor of Tangipahoa alternately for thirty years. At present he is
the notary public of Tangipahoa. In 1862 he enlisted in the late war, and
was commissioned as captain by Gov. Thomas O. Moore, and acted as general
recruiting officer for Camp Moore and particularly was influential in
raising and equipping the Ninth Louisiana battalion cavalry, to which
regiment he allied himself and continued with it during the war when not
engaged in his official duties as senator. He introduced a bill in the
legislature for the relief of the destitute families of confederate
soldiers for the Florida parishes, which became general, and he regularly
brought thousands of dollars for the relief of his constituents. Although
the money was much depreciated in value it was a godsend to the poor
starved soldiers' families. His brother, Frank Wall, was quartermaster of
the same regiment to which our subject belonged; during this time, Mr. J.
Paris Wall was in the state senate when that body was in session. He was
in the battle of Baton Rouge and was in several minor engagements, but in
no regular pitched battles. He was paroled at Clinton, La. Mr. Wall has
been twice married. The first time, 1854, he married Miss Mary B. Addison,
a native of Louisiana and a daughter of Dr. Overton C. and Bethsheba
(Louis) Addison, of Washington. D. C. and Louisiana respectively. Dr
Addison was a very prominent physician of this state. To this union there
were six children born, namely: Cora (deceased), Jennie, Drury W., May,
Natie and John P. (deceased.) In 1866 he took for his second wife Miss
Sallie E. Kemp, a native of Louisiana, and a daughter of Dempsey and
Adelaide (Thompson) Kemp, natives of Louisiana. Her father was a very
wealthy man. To this union were born the following ten children: Mary,
Emma L., Lena A., Carrie K. (deceased), Dempsey (also deceased), Julia C.,
Jay P., Ella, Preston H. and Bessie. Mr. and Mrs. Wall are members of the
Presbyterian church. He is a Mason and has been identified with that body
for twenty years. He is quite an extensive planter and owns several
thousand acres of land and 275 town lots in the town of Tangipahoa,
devoting a great deal of his time in buying and selling real estate. He is
well and favorably known throughout the entire parish, as an honorable,
upright and Christian gentleman.
