Prepare for the winners of **IOCCC28**.
> However these are not the 2024 droids you are looking for. :-)
The HTML menu (both JavaScript and non-JavaScript) has been updated.
The `Status -> Rules and guidelines' have been replaced with two
separate menus `Status -> IOCCC rules` and `Status -> IOCCC guidelines`.
Added a new top level `social.html` page: built from a new `social.md`.
Sorted rules for building specific web pages in the top level `Makefile`.
Added `make social` to make the `social.html` page from `social.md`.
The `bin/gen-top-html.sh` now is able to process a argument of **social**
to process the new top level `social.html` page.
Changed `bin/gen-top-html.sh` VERSION from "2.0.0 2025-03-13"
to "2.0.1 2025-07-25".
Below `About -> Home page` a new `About -> IOCCC social media` menu item
as added.
Because the menu change touched every HTML file, we changed the general
copyright date range for HTML files from "1984-2024" to "1984-2025"
due to the extensive changes made for **IOCCC28**.
Those markdown files that were modified in 2025 had their copyright date
range also changed from "1984-2024" to "1984-2025".
Rebuilt tarballs and sitemap due to the extensive HTML rebuilding.
Ran `make update` to perform the above.
We move `tmp/format-headers.sh` into `bin/format-headers.sh`.
We also add a few missing empty lines to `README.md`.
We add `bin/format-headers.sh` to the `bin/README.md`.
We run `bin/format-headers.sh` to perform the above.
Performed `make www` to accomplish the above and to test under macOS.
Instead of code blocks the bug / (mis)features statuses are quoted
rather than in a code block. In the case that there is more than one a
line break was added at the end of all but the last one.
A bug status was renamed to be slightly more correct (maybe more than
one was renamed for the same purpose but at least one was).
The bug statuses in the quotes are now bold to let them stand out
better.
The manifest entry_text for avgtime.sh is much better now and the
description by the author (which was missing) is now much better too (I
asked the author first if he wanted to provide something but he
suggested that 'you apply your wit "in a timely manner"'.
The unobfuscated code, which was put in deobfuscated/, has been turned
into alt code. In one case the already existing alt code was made alt2
and the unobfuscated code was alt. In the case of the ones with two C
files there, the one that did not require modification (to compile in
modern systems) were used as those are original.
In a few cases these changes suggested additional files: a test suite
Makefile for the alt code, a try.alt.sh script and maybe some other
things besides.
The bug status was updated for 2015/howe with a known bug: in particular
the test scripts do not work (at least not completely).
In the manifest all references (except for a file name that has not been
renamed - at least not yet) of 'deobfuscated' to 'unobfuscated': a minor
detail that might not matter much but it sounds ever so slightly better
(maybe). These other entries that had an entry_text change were
1995/garry and 2020/endoh2. Rebuilt .entry.json and index.html files for
this (and in the case of the moved code the index.html files also had to
be changed for that in addition to the Makefiles).
While not strictly necessary, replacing the two ASCII tab characters
in the markdown copyright comment makes it easier to detect problematic
TAB indentation within markdown files.
After this commit, only 90 markdown files have leading ASCII TAB
characters. And again, while not strictly necessary, we can consider
running expand on those 90 markdown files to see what effect that
might have on the HTML files they produce.
Replace leading ASCII TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE
characters (the default action of the `expand(1)` tool) might have
an negative effect on some HTML formatting where **hack-a-round**
formatting was attempted to fix broken indentation caused by
problematic ASCII TAB characters.
Think of this as a baseline for evaluating leading
TAB characters within markdown files.
TODO: Consider either using `expand(1)` to replace leading ASCII
TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters AND/OR
modifying the appropriate `bin` tool to convert leading ASCII TAB
characters into multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters.
The topbar, by way of JavaScript, now works
on mobile devices such as cell phones and
tablets.
Internal links for entries from 1984 thru 2015
have been adjusted.
Ran `make www` to perform the above.
TODO: Fix some color issues on topbar.
TODO: More testing!
In cases that are **outside of a markdown code block**,
a markdown line with ending in a tailing "\" can generate
problematic HTML.
We certain trailing backslashes outside of a markdown code block
with "<br>" HTML elements, or in some cases eliminated the
need for a trailing backslash.
In a few cases some unnecessary trailing backslashes inside
of a markdown code block were removed.
The following markdown files were changed in this commit:
```
1990/dds/README.md
1990/jaw/README.md
1991/ant/README.md
1991/rince/README.md
1991/westley/README.md
1992/vern/README.md
1992/westley/README.md
1998/schweikh1/README.md
2004/anonymous/README.md
2005/sykes/README.md
2006/toledo2/README.md
2011/toledo/README.md
2012/endoh2/README.md
2012/tromp/README.md
2013/robison/README.md
2015/hou/README.md
2015/howe/README.md
2015/schweikhardt/README.md
2018/burton1/README.md
2018/burton2/README.md
2018/ferguson/README.md
2018/vokes/README.md
2020/ferguson1/README.md
```
Performed `make www` to test these changes.
We added a space between the markdown triple code mark
and language that was enclosed in HTML comments.
So a line of the form:
````
```<!---c--->
````
became:
````
``` <!---c--->
````
This was done to **help** some code see that the HTML comment
string was not a markdown code specifier. Not all code
understands this after this changed. For example, `pandoc(1)`
still forms HTML classes of the form "<!---c-->"
when it encounters the above mentioned change.
We also fixed a problem with `2019/dogon/README.md` regarding
a markdown code block.
We also fixed a problem with `2020/yang/README.md` regarding
a markdown code block.
When language is specified in a markdown code block such as:
````
```c
printf("Hello, world!\n");
```
````
is used, the resulting HTML as produced by `pandoc(1)` combined
with our revised `ioccc.css` is not intent the code block well.
A temporary "_hack-a-round_" is to turn the "markdown code language
specifier" into an HTML comment. For example:
````
```<!---c-->
printf("Hello, world!\n");
```
````
This commits turns off existing markdown code language specifiers
for now, while preserving our ability to restore them in the future
when a better "_hack-a-round_" to the "markdown code language
specifier" problem is found.
The HTML impact if this "_hack-a-round_" is to produce HTML that
looks like this:
```
<pre class="<!---c-->"><code> .. </code></pre>
```
We might be able to create a complex set of classes for each markdown
code language (there won't be very many) in `ioccc.css`, or we might
find a more general CSS (or maybe `pandoc(1)`?) solution.
For now, this hack-a-round will have to do.
All code blocks in markdown have been intended by at least 4 spaces.
We add `--tab-stop=8` to all `pandoc(1)` executions in order to set
a better tab stop indentation, especially for tab intended code blocks.
Changed `bin/pandoc-wrapper.sh` VERSION from "1.5.3 2024-03-26"
to "1.6 2024-03-31".
Fixed `1991/brnstnd/sorta.README.md` so that the sorta code
is code blocks.
Removed unneeded paragraph group in copyright in `inc/footer.default.html`.
Fixed excess whitespace after list Author on entry `index.html` page.
Changed `bin/output-index-author.sh` VERSION from "1.5.2 2024-03-26"
to "1.6 2024-03-31".
Performed `make www` to perform the above and test under macOS.
TODO: Fix the problem of the initial line of code being extra intended.
TODO: Fix excess whitespace around code that is inline.
The inc/footer.default.html now has a common Copyright and CC BY-SA
4.0 License section for all generated HTML files.
All markdown files have a similar Copyright and CC
at the bottom in the form of an HTML comment.
The script had "s surrounding the git ls-files command which turned it
to a single file which of course is wrong.
Ran script again fixing many README.md files that had incorrect number
of blank lines for critical headers.
This will have to be done a final but a good number of files have been
corrected.
The try.sh script runs the commands that were in the try section. Having
this I discovered some errors in the avgtime.sh script which were fixed,
partly by having the cc.1 man page added (as not all systems have cc.1
in /usr/share/man/man1), in this case being gcc.1.gz (unzipped) from
Rocky Linux, and maybe other things besides. That script, avgtime.sh,
has also been updated to make sure at least two args are used and for
ShellCheck though some of the things ShellCheck wants to be done will
break the script so those warnings are disabled.
The README.md file has been format and typo fixed.
The war-and-peace.txt file has been added rather than forcing the script
(each time, in fact) to try and download it from Project Gutenberg.
As requested on GitHub: a tool that will be written, readme2index, will,
as explained:
'... will take the converted HTML from the README.md markdown and
inject it into an HTML template. Things such title, award one and
author information will be injected into the HTML page ahead of the
HTML that was converted from the README.md markdown. Without going
into details of HOW at this time, the result will be a coherent HTML
index.html page with the winner title / award, winning author
information, and important file links come from other sources and
NOT from the README.md file.
The text from the 1st award line, thru the authorship information,
and up to but not including the "## To build:" line in the README.md
file will just get in the way. Moreover authors might be tempted to
try and maintain that top of README.md text instead of working with
the author/_author_handle_.json and winner .winner.json files.
This was done with my[0] sgit(1) (https://github.com/xexyl/sgit) tool like:
sgit -o -n -e '/^## To build:/,$p' '[12][0-9][0-9][0-9]/*/README.md'
[0] Is that shameless self-promotion? I don't know but I don't care: it
is generally a very useful tool and has been used in other repos too.
Besides, I've done it many times before and it's a great example that I
will be adding to the README.md file of the tool, one I hadn't thought
of doing.
Change level 3 (###) to level 2 (##):
sgit -e 's/^### \(Alternate code\)/## \1/g' '*README.md'
which is the same as:
sgit -e 's/^### Alternate code/## Alternate code/g' '*README.md'
This is per discussion in GitHub.
As in:
sgit -e 's/# To run/# To use/g' '*README.md'
This makes consistent the message for how to use the program. 'How to
use' was chosen because one can run a program just by doing './foo' but
that doesn't imply that's how to use it but the purpose of the section
is how to use it.
This was done as:
sgit -e 's/\(# Alternate code\)$/\1:/g' '*README.md'
The heading levels and other things to do with alternate code that are
being discussed have not been addressed here. That will come later. This
is, as noted, just adding the missing ':' where it was missing.
The command does NOT touch it when it is not prefixed with '# ' because
there are cases where normal lines end with 'Alternate code' (these will
be turned into links later on).
The use of the markdown trailing whitespace to indicate
line break should NOT be done when the following line is empty.
This removes such improper use of whitespace in README.md files.
We further deprecate the use of twitter.
In cases such as historic guidelines and rules, we add
a note about using Mastodon.
In cases where a tweet URL was used, we replace with
an Internet Archive link because twitter has announced
that accounts that are not used for a period of time
will be deleted.
We add a few missing deprecated_twitter information
to the author.numbers and author.cvs files.
We remove references to twitter handles (after making
sure that both author.numbers and author.cvs has the
deprecated_twitter information). When the "_README.md_"
files have their header information generated by
a tool, such deprecated_twitter data will not be present.
There were many many README.md files with the wrong heading level for
different sections. These have been changed.
To help go through the changes it should be noted I used sgit and also
here is what is changed:
The 'Try', 'To build' and 'To run' lines have two '#'s. Some had one and
others had three.
An exception is that in 1984/anonymous/README.md for the alternative
code that had three '#'s. This is not consistent yet and it might be
that only two are desired. But for now that one at least has three.
With all README.md files I changed the copyright years to refer not to
2016 but 2015 as the year was 2015 and 2016 did not even have a contest.
I fixed formatting and some typos in a few of the README.md files but
mostly the changes are the copyright years.
As a reminder to myself I have only looked at (counting those of commit
fa31f80b39) burton, dogon, duble and part
of endoh1. The rest will come in a future commit or maybe commits.
