At the suggestion of Landon I have added some tips to both icing and the
cake. It might be possible for more to be added later on but hopefully
these are helpful to those who wish to try it. Something I will try
doing is adding sequential pictures of the icing but that involves
remembering it as we can't make it here until the winter (well we can
but it's a lot harder as even the winter can be fairly hot here,
exceeding 35 Celsius).
And to those who (presumably many) do wonder why I submitted this back
then when it has nothing to do with the contest: I really haven't the
foggiest but since this was requested I am doing it.
Landon reported an inconsistency. I discovered a placement issue. I also
added a note. The open issue will take more time to look at and consider
but the inconsistency is at least fixed now.
Prepare for the winners of **IOCCC28**.
> However these are not the 2024 droids you are looking for. :-)
The HTML menu (both JavaScript and non-JavaScript) has been updated.
The `Status -> Rules and guidelines' have been replaced with two
separate menus `Status -> IOCCC rules` and `Status -> IOCCC guidelines`.
Added a new top level `social.html` page: built from a new `social.md`.
Sorted rules for building specific web pages in the top level `Makefile`.
Added `make social` to make the `social.html` page from `social.md`.
The `bin/gen-top-html.sh` now is able to process a argument of **social**
to process the new top level `social.html` page.
Changed `bin/gen-top-html.sh` VERSION from "2.0.0 2025-03-13"
to "2.0.1 2025-07-25".
Below `About -> Home page` a new `About -> IOCCC social media` menu item
as added.
Because the menu change touched every HTML file, we changed the general
copyright date range for HTML files from "1984-2024" to "1984-2025"
due to the extensive changes made for **IOCCC28**.
Those markdown files that were modified in 2025 had their copyright date
range also changed from "1984-2024" to "1984-2025".
Rebuilt tarballs and sitemap due to the extensive HTML rebuilding.
Ran `make update` to perform the above.
While not strictly necessary, replacing the two ASCII tab characters
in the markdown copyright comment makes it easier to detect problematic
TAB indentation within markdown files.
After this commit, only 90 markdown files have leading ASCII TAB
characters. And again, while not strictly necessary, we can consider
running expand on those 90 markdown files to see what effect that
might have on the HTML files they produce.
Replace leading ASCII TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE
characters (the default action of the `expand(1)` tool) might have
an negative effect on some HTML formatting where **hack-a-round**
formatting was attempted to fix broken indentation caused by
problematic ASCII TAB characters.
Think of this as a baseline for evaluating leading
TAB characters within markdown files.
TODO: Consider either using `expand(1)` to replace leading ASCII
TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters AND/OR
modifying the appropriate `bin` tool to convert leading ASCII TAB
characters into multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters.
This seems like a good idea since there have been times where something
new has been discovered (rare but it has happened) or some clarification
has been added (it is, as originally noted, a very complicated recipe).
The date has been backdated to when I last updated it.
Fixed internal links in entry HTML files other than index.html.
Removed links to markdown files that otherwise used to
generate HTML files other than index.html.
Ran `make gen_other_html` to perform the above.
Improve `make clobber` for `2004/anonymous`.
Instead of using this markdown element to embed an image:
```
```
Use a "img" HTML element with "alt", "alt", "width" and "length"
attributes:
```
<img src="filename.png"
alt="describe the filename.png image for someone who cannot view it"
width=PIXEL_WIDTH height=PIXEL_HEIGHT>
```
This was performed for:
```
2004/anonymous/index.html
2005/boutines/index.html
2011/goren/index.html
2012/vik/index.html
2013/birken/index.html
2013/cable1/index.html
2013/cable3/index.html
2013/hou/doc/example.html
2013/hou/index.html
2020/ferguson1/chocolate-cake.html
```
In the case of `2013/cable1/index.html` we reduce the displayed
image size by a factor for 2. There is **NO** need to downsize the image
as this image size reduction produces a clean and sharp looking image.
In the case of `2013/hou/index.html` we reduce the displayed
image size by a factor for 2. There is **NO** need to downsize the image
as this image size reduction produces a clean and sharp looking image.
In the case of `2020/ferguson1/chocolate-cake.html` we reduce the displayed
image size by a factor for 4. There is **NO** need to downsize the image
as this image size reduction produces a clean and sharp looking image.
Run `make www` to perform the above.
In 2020/ferguson1 the chocolate-cake.md file has been updated with a
suggestion that those who try it let me know how they like it and
sharing pictures (on mastodon).
In 2020/ferguson2 all chocolate cake related files have been removed. A
new file encrypted.html has been added with a new task one might wish to
try since the cake recipe is in 2020/ferguson1.
The make clobber rule in 2020/ferguson2 removes decrypted.html (the
recode.md file now shows how one might decrypt the encrypted.html in the
file decrypted.html but this file should not be committed and is now in,
along with a few others, .gitignore).
The html files have NOT been updated as manifest issues have to be
resolved first.
The inc/footer.default.html now has a common Copyright and CC BY-SA
4.0 License section for all generated HTML files.
All markdown files have a similar Copyright and CC
at the bottom in the form of an HTML comment.
Be even more clear about certain notes that are vital to success in
making the cake. Of course in 2020/ferguson2 it's enciphered with the
Enigma machine (was part of a fun way to explore the entry but obviously
very few would do that since it's in plaintext in 2020/ferguson1).
The file cake.jpg was renamed to ioccc-cake.jpg. This file has a feeble
attempt to draw IOCCC on it but it does not show the cake iced properly
so I feel like it shouldn't be the main image. This image is linked to
but it is not embedded in the document.
The new cake.jpg is one from 14 February (my birthday) in 2022 (2022
because it's the best picture I found in recent years that show both the
top and the side so one can see how thick/tall it is or better see it
anyway). This should improve the presentation of the cake and do it much
more justice.
More notes have been made bold and capitalised as well as more explicit
and clearer.
Removed things that are not relevant (directly or indirectly) to the
recipe itself. For instance although fun the other IOCCC etc. just makes
the text longer and not get to the recipe which is the good part and
which was my original intent (obviously). For reference here that refers
to:
International Office of Cocoa, Chocolate and Sugar Confectionery
which is 'the other' IOCCC. A PDF file that was related to that was
removed which I might put elsewhere in time (other things removed might
or might not be put elsewhere too but that's none of that is certain
except I have copies of everything just in case I do wish to do that).
This commit will require a manifest update but that will likely not
happen until Saturday.
Updated chocolate-cake.md file with some added notes.
Added PDF file ioccc-and-chocolate.pdf which was downloaded from a
website I originally linked to in chocolate-cake.md.
Removed html files based on the markdown files as the markdown files are
the source of them and this is being done differently now. In other
words index.html and inventory.html have not been removed, just those
that were created by me (or from what I wrote).
This does not format fix anything as I can always do that later. It is
after all my entry.
Minor fix in play.sh.
Minor update in bugs.md.
I believe this completes the review of 2020/ferguson1 but it's entirely
possible (almost certain) that things could be cleaned up more. However
in order to get through the rest of 2020 I am only doing quick passes
over my entries.
This is a HUGE commit:
417 files changed, 874 insertions(+), 874 deletions(-)
As the IOCCC website now is https enabled I have updated the
'http://www.ioccc' to 'https://www.ioccc'.
There was also a typo in Makefiles where it said 'for VERY WELCOME' when
it should be 'are VERY WELCOME'.
Finally slashdot.org is also https enabled so references to
'http://slashdot' were changed to 'https://slashdot'.
This was done by my sgit tool (see https://github.com/xexyl/sgit)
like:
sgit -e 's,http://www.ioccc,https://www.ioccc,g' -e 's/for VERY WELCOME/are VERY WELCOME/g' -e .
but because I didn't have a list of files that should be modified I had
to be careful which files to commit as I had files that were changed but
not ready to be committed. Since I did it in steps, finding typos as I
went along, I actually ran sgit three times but to simplify the above
(and to show that it's possible to do more than one sed command) I made
it all as one. Since I did not have a list of files ahead of time I had
to determine what files to commit, first going through them like:
for j in $(for i in $(git status|grep modified|cut -d: -f2); do \
git grep 'https://www.ioccc' "$i"; done|cut -d: -f1|sort|uniq); \
do git diff "$j"; done|less -r
(I had to pipe through less because of a strange problem with the git
diff which appears to be because of a terminal problem maybe due to the
command above but it was all I could come up with in a very tired head.)
The above and
git status | grep modified:
showed that some C files had been modified which obviously should not be
done so I had to do:
git co '*c'
to undo those changes.
Finally to commit the correct files I did:
for i in $(git status|grep modified|cut -d: -f2); do \
git grep -E 'https://www.ioccc|https://slashdot|are VERY WELCOME' "$i"; \
done |cut -d: -f1|sort|uniq|xargs git commit -v
or so (with any formatting issues or typos here due to typos in the log
due to the terminal (in)sanity issue described).
We further deprecate the use of twitter.
In cases such as historic guidelines and rules, we add
a note about using Mastodon.
In cases where a tweet URL was used, we replace with
an Internet Archive link because twitter has announced
that accounts that are not used for a period of time
will be deleted.
We add a few missing deprecated_twitter information
to the author.numbers and author.cvs files.
We remove references to twitter handles (after making
sure that both author.numbers and author.cvs has the
deprecated_twitter information). When the "_README.md_"
files have their header information generated by
a tool, such deprecated_twitter data will not be present.
Updated the chocolate-cake.md file to stress important points (including
by making the ingredients - in the instructions parts - upper case to
make it stand out more). Some of the points are critical.
Added to 2020/ferguson2/.gitignore a file that is used to encrypt the
chocolate-cake.md (from 2020/ferguson1) for the Enigma entry (even
though anyone interested would use the 2020/ferguson1 plaintext
version). This is because it's easier to have than to look up the syntax
each time (of the recode program).
There were some things I wanted to reiterate and stress even more that
are important notes about the cake.
Of course the ferguson2 files are still encrypted with a specific key
for the Enigma machine (one of the keys I provided in recode.md /
recode.html but which is a challenge though probably pointless since
it's also in ferguson1 unencrypted).
Updated 2020/ferguson2/.gitignore: added data files specific to the
encryption of the cake files so I can more easily fix it should I need
to update the files under 2020/ferguson2 (unlikely as that might be).
As luck would have it the only entries where this applied were my own.
The links/references to these files have been changed in the files.
An unfortunate problem is that in 2020/ferguson1 there are several
*.markdown files. I will have to go through these and figure out which
ones should be changed to .md and which ones can be removed. This can
happen later but in the meantime the references are to .md. I believe
the only difference is that the .md has the footer added by the judges.
This was a workaround with the fact that I wasn't sure (and still am not
entirely sure) the generation of the html files will work. It might be
that the .markdown files have the footer and the .md files do not but
this can be dealt with later anyway.
