Make lines beginning (in markdown files) 'BTW' bold. Rebuilt the
respective html pages.
Slight update to abstract in two entries (1985/shapiro and
1994/shapiro). One is changing 'defines' to '#defines' and the other was
a typo fix.
Fixed make gen_next: added missing new files.
Various fixes in next/register.html (typos and other things).
A typo in markdown meant that a link was not formed.
Renamed enigma.html to enigma.txt. Although it was to be set to viewed
as text the problem is that as a html file running a linter on it will
cause errors (obviously).
The .entry.json and all files that referred to the file enigma.html (not
in remote web servers, obviously, but just this website) now refer to
enigma.txt, except that enigma.html was now added to .gitignore and the
recode.md (in the example command) redirects to enigma.html as that
should be a html file, assuming they have the right key (of the
selection I gave).
These problems were not discovered due to trying to get the html files
in a good state (ironically) and knowing that I had written a lot.
I believe now that the files should be okay.
Although I did use sgit I did it carefully and I still ran make
quick-readme2index and make gen_other_html.
Amongst the changes here is that we do not need to have the hex or html
code (numbers) for open and close parentheses (in links) as there are
names. '(' is & followed by lpar; and the ')' is the same but 'rpar;'
instead. This makes it easier to remember and type and it generates the
same html as well (they are all valid). Now the markdown files are
consistent in this (in some cases hex was used and in others the html
code).
Although many markdown files were updated no html files needed to be
updated as it generates the same html. Even so I ran the appropriate
rules to do so just to verify this.
Added testing procedure (markdown, html: testing-procedure.{md,html}).
Updated the recode.{md,html} and README.md for this as well.
Updated the hidden message file (enigma.html) for a bit more fun.
Updated manifest, rebuilt index.html and .entry.json.
Given how problematic leading tabs in markdown files can be,
we have expanded all leading tabs in markdown files by:
```sh
find * -type f -name '*.md' -print |
while read -r file; do
rm -f "$file.tmp" ;
expand < "$file" > "$file.tmp" ;
mv -f -v "$file.tmp" "$file" ;
done
```
Given the previous changes to `bin/pandoc-wrapper.sh` and other recent
commits and recent pull requests, the were were **NO** changes to
any HTML files. This is a **good thing** as the expression goes.
No there are no leading tabs in any markdown files.
A check to catch any re-introduction of leading tabs
into any markdown file is on the way.
BTW: We do not have anything against leading tabs in files,
even though we have had to deal with their impact on forming
HTML from markdown files (as well as the calc source code).
It is just that this is one of those cases where tabs conflict
(sometimes caused by people wanting to change the classic
8-space tab model) with a desired outcome.
Perform `make www` to perform the above and test under macOS.
While not strictly necessary, replacing the two ASCII tab characters
in the markdown copyright comment makes it easier to detect problematic
TAB indentation within markdown files.
After this commit, only 90 markdown files have leading ASCII TAB
characters. And again, while not strictly necessary, we can consider
running expand on those 90 markdown files to see what effect that
might have on the HTML files they produce.
Replace leading ASCII TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE
characters (the default action of the `expand(1)` tool) might have
an negative effect on some HTML formatting where **hack-a-round**
formatting was attempted to fix broken indentation caused by
problematic ASCII TAB characters.
Think of this as a baseline for evaluating leading
TAB characters within markdown files.
TODO: Consider either using `expand(1)` to replace leading ASCII
TAB characters with multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters AND/OR
modifying the appropriate `bin` tool to convert leading ASCII TAB
characters into multiples of 8 ASCII SPACE characters.
Fixed stuff we broke by mistake, previously.
Ran `make www` to perform the above.
TODO: Fix stuff we broke by mistake doing the above.
TODO: Fix more broken markdown links.
We fix more markdown links in markdown files that refer to files
internally to the web site.
Added tmp tools to find and print various markdown links:
* `tmp/md-links.sh` - print all markdown links
* `tmp/md-token-links.sh` - print all markdown links that start with a **%%TOKEN%%**
* `tmp/md-local-links.sh` - print all markdown links to a local file
* `tmp/md-link-paths.sh` - print local file paths referenced in markdown links
Fixed a number of markdown formatting problems with `thanks-for-help.md`.
Fixed markdown links to files in `thanks-for-help.md`. Improved
heading levels in `thanks-for-help.md`, and made entry sections consistent.
Changed all markdown links that end in "))" to end in a better way.
Explained in `markdown.md` why we are avoiding markdown links that
end in "))".
Ran `make www` to perform the above.
TODO: Fix stuff we broke by mistake doing the above.
TODO: Fix more broken markdown links.
Fixed internal links in entry HTML files other than index.html.
Removed links to markdown files that otherwise used to
generate HTML files other than index.html.
Ran `make gen_other_html` to perform the above.
We added a space between the markdown triple code mark
and language that was enclosed in HTML comments.
So a line of the form:
````
```<!---c--->
````
became:
````
``` <!---c--->
````
This was done to **help** some code see that the HTML comment
string was not a markdown code specifier. Not all code
understands this after this changed. For example, `pandoc(1)`
still forms HTML classes of the form "<!---c-->"
when it encounters the above mentioned change.
We also fixed a problem with `2019/dogon/README.md` regarding
a markdown code block.
We also fixed a problem with `2020/yang/README.md` regarding
a markdown code block.
When language is specified in a markdown code block such as:
````
```c
printf("Hello, world!\n");
```
````
is used, the resulting HTML as produced by `pandoc(1)` combined
with our revised `ioccc.css` is not intent the code block well.
A temporary "_hack-a-round_" is to turn the "markdown code language
specifier" into an HTML comment. For example:
````
```<!---c-->
printf("Hello, world!\n");
```
````
This commits turns off existing markdown code language specifiers
for now, while preserving our ability to restore them in the future
when a better "_hack-a-round_" to the "markdown code language
specifier" problem is found.
The HTML impact if this "_hack-a-round_" is to produce HTML that
looks like this:
```
<pre class="<!---c-->"><code> .. </code></pre>
```
We might be able to create a complex set of classes for each markdown
code language (there won't be very many) in `ioccc.css`, or we might
find a more general CSS (or maybe `pandoc(1)`?) solution.
For now, this hack-a-round will have to do.
All code blocks in markdown have been intended by at least 4 spaces.
We add `--tab-stop=8` to all `pandoc(1)` executions in order to set
a better tab stop indentation, especially for tab intended code blocks.
Changed `bin/pandoc-wrapper.sh` VERSION from "1.5.3 2024-03-26"
to "1.6 2024-03-31".
Fixed `1991/brnstnd/sorta.README.md` so that the sorta code
is code blocks.
Removed unneeded paragraph group in copyright in `inc/footer.default.html`.
Fixed excess whitespace after list Author on entry `index.html` page.
Changed `bin/output-index-author.sh` VERSION from "1.5.2 2024-03-26"
to "1.6 2024-03-31".
Performed `make www` to perform the above and test under macOS.
TODO: Fix the problem of the initial line of code being extra intended.
TODO: Fix excess whitespace around code that is inline.
In 2020/ferguson1 the chocolate-cake.md file has been updated with a
suggestion that those who try it let me know how they like it and
sharing pictures (on mastodon).
In 2020/ferguson2 all chocolate cake related files have been removed. A
new file encrypted.html has been added with a new task one might wish to
try since the cake recipe is in 2020/ferguson1.
The make clobber rule in 2020/ferguson2 removes decrypted.html (the
recode.md file now shows how one might decrypt the encrypted.html in the
file decrypted.html but this file should not be committed and is now in,
along with a few others, .gitignore).
The html files have NOT been updated as manifest issues have to be
resolved first.
The inc/footer.default.html now has a common Copyright and CC BY-SA
4.0 License section for all generated HTML files.
All markdown files have a similar Copyright and CC
at the bottom in the form of an HTML comment.
This is a HUGE commit:

As the IOCCC website now is https enabled I have updated the
'http://www.ioccc' to 'https://www.ioccc'.
There was also a typo in Makefiles where it said 'for VERY WELCOME' when
it should be 'are VERY WELCOME'.
Finally slashdot.org is also https enabled so references to
'http://slashdot' were changed to 'https://slashdot'.
This was done by my sgit tool (see https://github.com/xexyl/sgit)
like:
sgit -e 's,http://www.ioccc,https://www.ioccc,g' -e 's/for VERY WELCOME/are VERY WELCOME/g' -e .
but because I didn't have a list of files that should be modified I had
to be careful which files to commit as I had files that were changed but
not ready to be committed. Since I did it in steps, finding typos as I
went along, I actually ran sgit three times but to simplify the above
(and to show that it's possible to do more than one sed command) I made
it all as one. Since I did not have a list of files ahead of time I had
to determine what files to commit, first going through them like:
for j in $(for i in $(git status|grep modified|cut -d: -f2); do \
git grep 'https://www.ioccc' "$i"; done|cut -d: -f1|sort|uniq); \
do git diff "$j"; done|less -r
(I had to pipe through less because of a strange problem with the git
diff which appears to be because of a terminal problem maybe due to the
command above but it was all I could come up with in a very tired head.)
The above and
git status | grep modified:
showed that some C files had been modified which obviously should not be
done so I had to do:
git co '*c'
to undo those changes.
Finally to commit the correct files I did:
for i in $(git status|grep modified|cut -d: -f2); do \
git grep -E 'https://www.ioccc|https://slashdot|are VERY WELCOME' "$i"; \
done |cut -d: -f1|sort|uniq|xargs git commit -v
or so (with any formatting issues or typos here due to typos in the log
due to the terminal (in)sanity issue described).
To make this easier to see what it all is I'm doing this in a separate
pull request.
Some of the links were broken and I added some links as well. I tried to
only link to the same thing once (per section) but it's possible I
missed some.
Format fixes in some code blocks and probably other things too.
Clarify and reword some things as well.
And _this_ should be the final one for now unless I see a problem on
GitHub (I'll be checking the rendered output of the markdown files and
making any fixes if necessary).
With this commit I should be able to return to the other entries though
as Landon pointed out I might never finish this and this is a reason it
might not have been as thorough as I could have been (another part is
it's long). Nevertheless the formatting should now be okay along the
lines of what was requested for all the winning entry markdown files.
As luck would have it the only entries where this applied were my own.
The links/references to these files have been changed in the files.
An unfortunate problem is that in 2020/ferguson1 there are several
*.markdown files. I will have to go through these and figure out which
ones should be changed to .md and which ones can be removed. This can
happen later but in the meantime the references are to .md. I believe
the only difference is that the .md has the footer added by the judges.
This was a workaround with the fact that I wasn't sure (and still am not
entirely sure) the generation of the html files will work. It might be
that the .markdown files have the footer and the .md files do not but
this can be dealt with later anyway.
