It is not clear, as the FAQ shows for now, whether this works with just
desktop/computers or not - it is only possible to enable it on computers
(or if it's possible in mobile devices I did not see it though I only
checked with an iPhone).
This FAQ should probably be linked to in the guidelines later on as
right now it says that one should reload the feed as you do not get
notifications unless you are mentioned (assuming you have push
notifications enabled). As one of the pending changes post winners being
announced (02 August 2025 at 11 Pacific) is to clean up the guidelines,
rules and maybe the FAQ (that was rushed towards the end so as to not
delay IOCCC28 even longer) I have not done this.
Rebuilt faq.html. New image under png/.
FAQ version: 28.2.21 2025-07-31.
The three important files, next/{register,submit,pw-change}.{md,html}
no longer have images in them (besides the logo at the top of the image
which has nothing to do with registering, submitting or changing
passwords); instead the text in the images are actual text (in some
cases, just the relevant parts and in others all or almost all).
The png/register.* and png/submit.* images were removed.
The screenshots are more recent (including some new ones).
The welcome email images have not been updated as some things have to be
answered before that can be done.
The current files were renamed to be shorter as well.
Typo/format fixes were made in next/pw-change.html, next/register.html,
next/submit.html.
The screenshot for register step 6 (welcome email) was updated to
reflect a typo I had reported (after it was fixed). The html file still
has to be checked for rendering and that will be done soon.
We added some images to `next/register.md` and thus to
`next/register.html`.
We modified FAQ 0.0 with these 2 new steps:
3. Wait for your submit server username and initial password
4. Login to the submit server and change your password
This is just a checkpoint: these need to be improved but
we are too tired.
NEEDED TODO: Create a new `next/chpw.html` page and move the images
and text from the new FAQ 0.0 step 4 into this new place.
This will keep the step of FAQ 0.0 shorter to read while
keeping the details and images in a separate web page.
New screenshots have been added with new explanations. A couple files
were either deleted or renamed.
There were some fixes as well.
I have looked at the result on the web server and it appears to look and
read well and hopefully this will suffice for this part of the how to
submit FAQ.
It might be worth pointing out that the screenshots might be better
done. For instance some of the longer lines are in some cut off. This
was to try and fit it in smaller screens but it might not be desirable.
Another issue is the scaling of one of the smaller images might make it
too small, at least for people like me who are practically blind.
The wording could definitely be improved as well but I wanted this
initial update in so it can be looked at better and any improvements
necessary can be discussed.
The index.html file (from index.md) now links to the no JavaScript menu
for those who either wish to use a plaintext menu or for those who the
menu does not work (like I discovered with my iPhone 8 Plus - iOS 16
Safari, a bug that was fixed in iOS 17). It also links to a new FAQ
about the menus: how they work and also what to do if they don't work.
By 'how they work' this refers to on desktop/laptops, on mobile devices:
without JavaScript enabled and also on mobile phones and tablets in
portrait and also landscape mode plus on mobile devices wider than 1024
pixels and also the browser bug I referred to above.
This includes three new png files, screenshots of how it looks on an
iPhone 14 Pro Max (which should be like other mobile phones), one which
shows the iOS 16 Safari bug and one which shows desktops. These are of
course used in the FAQ.
Although not every html file has a link to the plaintext (i.e. the menu
for those with JavaScript disabled), it is hoped that these two changes
will help people navigate if they have a problem with the menus.
The icons used to show the menu open (`png/hamburger-icon-open.png`)
and closed (`png/hamburger-icon-closed.png`) have been added.
Changed `inc/topbar.default.html` to use the png icons instead
of a svg file.
A new page `nojs-menu.html` has been added for when
JavaScript is disabled.
Changed `bin/gen-top-html.sh` VERSION from to "1.4.4 2024-04-21"
to "1.4.5 2024-04-23".
Sorted top sections in `inc/md2html.cfg` and added
a section for `nojs-menu.md`.
Fixed `ioccc.css` so that the topbar and related pulldown
menus had the correct background colour.
Ran `make www` to perform the above.
TODO: Detect when JavaScript is disabled and display:
Please
Enable
JavaScript
As a link to the new `nojs-menu.html` page.
TODO: Fix a problem on wide screens where some of
the righthand edge pulldown menus are cutoff.
TODO: Fix the 5 HTML 5 errors introduced by the topbar code.
We improve the `inc/footer.default.html` file to make
the _Copyright and CC BY-SA 4.0 License_ clear.
We add `license.md` and generate `license.html` (via `make
gen_top_html`) so that key features and terms of the _Copyright and
CC BY-SA 4.0 License_ are accessible.
Add CC BY-SA 4.0 license images into the `png/` directory.
FYI: We use the license to allow the open use of IOCCC entry code,
and at the same time, we help ensure that those working on the IOCCC
have proper Attribution including, of course, the IOCCC winners
themselves! The _Copyright and CC BY-SA 4.0 License_ help ensure
that everyone may enjoy the IOCCC.
Added '#copyright' to all generated HTML pages so that the
_Copyright and CC BY-SA 4.0 License_ may be reached.
Changed `bin/gen-top-html.sh` VERSION from "1.2.2 2024-03-26"
to "1.2.3 2024-04-12".
Fix `bin/gen-sitemap.sh` to remove requirement of `ioccc.tar.bz2`.
Changed `bin/gen-sitemap.sh` VERSION from "1.3.4 2024-03-27"
to "1.3.5 2024-04-13".
Perform `make www sitemap` to perform the above.
We also give a _hint_ as to the next project.
TODO: Complete that next project we are _hinting_ at.
TODO: Review the work being done by a web designer to see
how their work might be incorporated into the web site.
We rename `bin/gen-top-md2html.sh` to `bin/gen-top-html.sh`.
Modified the `bin/gen-top-html.sh` tool to build `archive/historic/index.html`
from `archive/historic/README.md`.
In `bin/gen-top-html.sh` changed VERSION from "1.1 2024-02-28"
to "1.2 2024-02-29".
Renamed `make gen_top_md2html` to `gen_top_html` in the top level `Makefile`.
Improved `archive/historic/README.md`.
Updated `robots.txt` to include the Sitemap directive.
Moved unused `valid-html401.png` to `png/valid-html401.png`.
This png image may be used later.
Performed `make gen_top_html` which rebuilt all top level HTML files
as well as `bin/index.html` and `inc/index.html`.
For the top level and year level README.md, where email are found,
a note was added to the effect that email addresses found above are
for historical purposes only, and should not be used today.
Old references to asking for fixes, comments, when content was used,
and next contest links were replaced with a general reference to the FAQ.
Harmonized the Copyright and License and copyright dates.
Now using Creative Commons "CC BY-SA 4.0 DEED Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0
International".
The above Creative Commons will become the standard for the IOCCC.
Replaced old `png/by-sa-3.0-88x31.png` with a new ` png/by-sa.88x31.png` icon.
Updated the top level HTML files to use the license.
There are three new images in png/ which are part of this entry. It
might be reasonable to remove ne but to keep it consistent with the rest
of the answer it is kept there for now.
This commit is partly a test to see how it comes out with GitHub and
also in general so that it might have to be revised.
The faq.md has had some html added as well, not only embedded CSS style
for 'img' to hopefully make it responsive but also the question has a
named anchor to link to more easily later on (this is likely to happen
to the rest of the questions/answers at another time).
The 2020 winners are hinted it, but the source code is not there,
nor are the hints. Someone could look into the HTML and
see what was commented out, but that is not a problem because
WHO won is known and the name of their AWARD is known already.
Moreover a number of the winners have talked about what their
entirs do, so the commented out spoiler text is not a bit problem.
One will find HTML commented out with:
<!-- XXX remove when 2020 is ready
2020 links here
XXX remove when 2020 is ready -->
The "XXX remove when 2020 is ready" string is found at the
start and end comment blocks. Again, soneone could read
what was commented out, but that is OK since most of that
information is known or can be known. The following files
have such HTML comment blocks in them.
./winners.html
./years-spoiler.html
./years.html
In addition, ./all/summary.txt was modified to not
include the 2020 entries for the momemt.
The 2020 winner code AND write-ups are NOT part of this set.
p.s. The all/all.tar.bz2 does not contain the 2020 source code (yet?).
