#
# You should also check the ansi.mk or common.mk for the
# proper compiler name and flags.
# The orig.Makefile, if it exits, is the original Makefile before this IOCCC
# year directory was reworked so that entries are in separate directories.
# This also applies to any orig.ansi.mk and orig.common.mk files.

# The orig.Makefile, if it exits, is a copy of the pre-modified Makefile.
#
# Regarding individual entries:
#
# IOCCC winning entry code may not work on your system. Even with standards,
# conditions and build environments change, especially when it comes to more
# extreme code such you might find in an IOCCC winner. Moreover, what was
# allowed and liked in one IOCCC contest may no longer be liked/allowed in
# later IOCCC years.
#
# Corrections on winning author and fixing typos in remarks are VERY WELCOME.
#
# GitHub pull requests are welcome:
#
# If you have a patch that might make running an entry work in modern Unix-like
# environments, please create a GitHub pull request for the IOCCC judges to
# consider.
#
# Suggestions and corrections regarding Makefiles, winning author information,
# fixing typos in remarks, and code patches are welcome via opening a GitHub

## Judges' comments
Some C preprocessors get confused about single quotes in certain cases.
In particular, the following source line:
Cb12(ase(bco(acp(bi(acp(bcp(acp(bpl(aqu(bqu(A))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Cb12(ase(bco(acp(bi(acp(bcp(acp(bpl(aqu(bqu(A))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
may need to be changed to:
Cb12(ase(bco(acp(bi(acp(bcp(acp(bpl('A'))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Cb12(ase(bco(acp(bi(acp(bcp(acp(bpl('A'))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
if your C preprocessor botches single quotes in cpp expansions.
Systems that have index() and don't strchr() (e.g., BSD) should
compile with without -Dindex=strchr.

# You should also check the ansi.mk or common.mk for the

# Regarding individual entries:
#
# IOCCC winning entry code may not work on your system. Even with standards,

# later IOCCC years.

# An Historical Makefile NOTE:

# NOTE ==> USE=ansi compile with an ANSI compiler by default
#USE=ansi
# NOTE ==> USE=common compile with a common K&R compiler by default

# Several Makefiles were modified / formed in 2022, and as such it may have
# elements that are not historically compatible with way entries were built.
# issue or better yet, by creating a GitHub pull request for the IOCCC judges

The common.mk (non-ANSI) makefile uses sed to form scjones.alt.c.
The scjones.alt.c is similar to the original scjones.c source,
but with all the trigraphs converted. You might want to try:
make -f common.mk scjones.alt.c
even if you only have an ANSI compiler, just to see how
the trigrapsh are converted.
WARNING: In the future, we will be passing ANSI programs through a
trigraph filter before reading. Trigraph-ifacation will
not be a major consideration in future contests. People
should exploit more interesting features of ANSI C.

did not allow Stig Hemmer's form of aliasing. (The error
may have also been due to some uucp site corrupting his

Note that shst.c is renamed to stig.c in the distribution.
Producing an equivalent C-shell alias or /bin/sh function
is left as an exercise to the reader.

# Corrections on winning author and fixing typos in remarks are VERY WELCOME.

# GitHub pull requests are welcome:

# If you have a patch that might make running an entry work in modern Unix-like
# environments, please create a GitHub pull request for the IOCCC judges to
# consider.

# Suggestions and corrections regarding Makefiles, winning author information,
