Added `bin/sgit`.
This directory is NOT intended to become a huge software project
right now. For now it is just a convenient place to store tools.
Please avoid overthinking, over documenting tools under bin.
Later on there will be a tool that builds links in the web site
from JSON files, perhaps forms HTML files from markdown files, etc.
However we will have to make major progress on issue #1, issue #2,
issue #3 and issue #4 before such code can be written.
In some cases tools put under bin might go away later on
if they are no longer needed.
Probably one of the most requested mods was to merge years-spoiler.html
with years.html as how an entry does what it does, not what it does
at a high level is what is important.
This mod also allows us to maintain only one file for entry info.
The archive/archive-YYYY.tar.bz2 compressed tarballs
came from the old IOCCC web site files of the form
YYYY/YYYY.tar.bz2.
The directories archive/YYYY/ are added to .gitignore
so that one may unpack all of the archives without
adding content to this repo.
TODO: Mention the archive/archive-YYYY.tar.bz2 compressed tarballs
on the web site. Perhaps a archive/README.md file would be best.
There were two instructions for building but the one (with the compiler
line) did not work any more and once fixed it appears to be the same as
what the Makefile does so I've removed that example.
As well I fixed the file to refer to 'biggar' and not 'markb'.
To get it to compile we have to pass to the compiler -include unistd.h.
To get it to compile without warnings we had to add -Wno-parentheses to
the compiler invocation.
Updated the README to include an example invocation (using the program
source itself) as the old way no longer works (typing in long lines
directly).
Removed some comments that turn out to not be true (it does not need a
K&R compiler for instance).
In particular the following fixes were made:
-MKFIFo= mkfifo
+MKFIFO= mkfifo
-ZIPGREp= zipgrep
-ZIPINFo= zipinfo
+ZIPGREP= zipgrep
+ZIPINFO= zipinfo
If it's not immediately clear what the problem is the last letter of the
variable names were in lower case.
There are some places (namely the rules and guidelines) where I am not
yet certain if this is intentional (though I've always wondered).
Another file has it but it's a data file in a winning entry and I'm not
sure about that yet either.
Depending on if it was the beginning of the sentence the EMail would
become 'Email' or 'email'.
Some references of 'Email' were changed to 'email' as well as those were
not in the beginning of a sentence.
A few places some consistency of capitalised email address (made lower
case) were changed to match other places of the same pattern.
This was a tool that was used for some years but it was not in
.gitignore which meant that if someone compiled it it the binary mkentry
would be in git status.
I missed a '.text' file (chocolate-cake.text) in 2020/ferguson2 in
years.html.
As an aside on that famous chocolate cake recipe: since I included that
recipe in all my entries of 2020 and since the Enigma had a fun
challenge for that recipe: unless you want to play with the Enigma
machine and in so doing reward yourself with a wonderful double-layered
chocolate fudge cake recipe (the fudge being the icing) which is a
speciality of my mum's it would be better to just check the
ferguson1/chocolate-cake.html version as that's not enciphered. The
html versions are the recommended files to check at least with a
browser.
Due to (at the time of publication of the 2020 winning entries) the
rename of '.markdown' to '.text' and earlier on not being sure of how to
get the correct footer in the files (except manually) some additional
files (.markdown) were added to these two entries. The .md files were
correct in that they have not only the correct footer but they also have
lists fixed (spaces between lines starting with '-').
As well in years.html some files referred to '.text' which no longer
exist either and others referred to '.markdown' files and still others
to '.text' files and those two extensions are wrong.
This commit deletes the following files:
deleted: 2020/ferguson1/bugs.markdown
deleted: 2020/ferguson1/gameplay.markdown
deleted: 2020/ferguson1/spoilers.markdown
deleted: 2020/ferguson1/terminals.markdown
deleted: 2020/ferguson1/troubleshooting.markdown
deleted: 2020/ferguson2/recode.markdown
which as I noted above were incorrect.
This commit is part of fixing years.html wrt missing files but since
they're all related to the same author in the same year (me in 2020) I
felt they belonged in a commit separate from the other fixes which are
more general.
This change is one that is probably subjective which is why the
explanation below. It said:
Please do NOT bookmark nor link to this experimental web site:
Now it's true that following 'not' a nor can be used before the second
or further of two[0] or more alternatives (first one being introduced in
this case by nor) to suggest that they each are false or do not happen
but somehow the wording:
Please do NOT bookmark or link to this experimental web site:
flows better in my head. Again this is subjectively better and it might
even be a controversial thing but this feels better anyway.
Not that this is a double negative but on the subject of language a
couple fun facts about double negatives: in standard Spanish and Polish
they are used AND it was not until after the 16th century that they were
frowned up on in English.
Question: if !! (not not) cancels out the ! (meaning it's not negative
or rather it's true) is !!! (not not not or false) a not (false), a
double not (true) or a triple not (false) ? :-)
[0] Actually in this case it should be one or more alternatives but this
is either a mistake in OED or me being too literal (which is very
possible). 'Possibility' would be a better word to use as would 'choice'
(but there are certainly other, uh, choices).
Many more need to be checked. Checking for dead links should not be hard
based on a quick script I wrote but any missing files will have to be
fixed later.
There was a reference to Leo's fix to 1992/albert but although the
source code exists by the name given the email message did not. It
referred to 1992/albert/albert.fix.hint which did not exist. Previously
the README.md was actually that meant that the real entry README.md was
not generated into a html file. Thus I renamed the two files but only
now noticed that it's referenced in years-spoiler.html. I've renamed the
albert.bug.md to be albert.fix.hint.md to match the years-spoiler.html
wording (certainly another form could be contrived) but make it a
markdown file (even though it's not one).
Some lists were did not come out as lists due to no blank lines in the
markdown.
Put a few code things between ``s. In one case I was unclear on what it
should be but elsewhere in the document what I needed so all should be
good there.
Might have been one or two normal typos.
As luck would have it the only entries where this applied were my own.
The links/references to these files have been changed in the files.
An unfortunate problem is that in 2020/ferguson1 there are several
*.markdown files. I will have to go through these and figure out which
ones should be changed to .md and which ones can be removed. This can
happen later but in the meantime the references are to .md. I believe
the only difference is that the .md has the footer added by the judges.
This was a workaround with the fact that I wasn't sure (and still am not
entirely sure) the generation of the html files will work. It might be
that the .markdown files have the footer and the .md files do not but
this can be dealt with later anyway.
The README.md had an email to the judges from Leo (prior to being a
judge, presumably) which means that the index file would not end up with
information about the entry.
The old contents of the README.md were copied to albert.bug.md though
perhaps it should not be a markdown file. The name was arbitrarily
selected and a better name could certainly be contrived.
There is one exception:
$ find . -name '*.hint' -execdir git mv '{}' README.md \;
git statufatal: destination exists, source=1992/albert/albert.hint, destination=1992/albert/README.md
Looking at the two files they differ quite a bit so I've not changed it.
I'll bring this up on GitHub.

but I am not clear on some of the changes here. For instance some of the
text changed were html anchors and I'm not sure of the implications of
it other than the fact that changing the filenames (see commits
77fb0f11a2 and
851e191519) would break the links. Whether
more needs to be done or not I do not know.
